Sometimes the hardest people group to pray for is family, because there may be a lot of history, years of unresolved issues, or perhaps despite your best efforts, it’s unclear how they will ever make the decision to surrender their lives to Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour.
Interceding for family members who don’t believe in Jesus is an act of love, patience, and faith. Scripture shows us that salvation is God’s work, but prayer prepares hearts and opens doors. Here’s a simple, faith-centered way to intercede effectively:
Some practical knowledge that I have learned through experience, and my walk with Jesus, is simple. God is a God of peace, not a God of confusion.
Pray for Their Hearts, Not Arguments
Ask God to soften their hearts and remove spiritual blindness. Only the Holy Spirit can reveal truth.
“The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers…” (2 Corinthians 4:4)
Pray that God gives them understanding, curiosity, and openness to the gospel.
Ask God to Reveal Jesus to Them
Pray that they encounter Jesus personally—through dreams, conversations, Scripture, or life experiences.
“No one can come to Me unless the Father draws them.” (John 6:44)
Pray for God to Send the Right People
Sometimes family members hear truth more easily from others. Ask God to place believers in their lives who will show Christ through love and wisdom.
A Simple Intercessory Prayer
“Lord, I lift my family before You. Open their hearts to Your truth and draw them to Jesus. Remove every barrier that keeps them from knowing You. Use my life as a reflection of Your love, and give me patience and faith as I trust You with their salvation. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
